The Women’s History Coalition (The Coalition) was founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1986 by a group of women in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The primary purpose is to coordinate and promote Women's History Month, which is nationally celebrated each March. The Coalition has a multi-ethnic Board of Directors elected by its membership annually and all programs are accomplished by volunteers who have a common interest in preserving the history and contributions of women in South Florida. Members, community contributions and grants from the county and many community agencies support activities.

Welcome from the President

 

Dear Friends of Women's History:

As we close out the school year, on behalf of our Board of Directors, I want to thank everyone for your support of our efforts. As an all-volunteer group, we continue to strive to highlight the many accomplishments of women in Miami-Dade County. As well, we share historical moments and issues impacting women. Your support is critical to our work.

I am honored to serve as the President of the Women's History Coalition for a third year. I hope you will consider becoming a member and supporting our important work. The membership application and nominal fee is on this web page.

Please also consider becoming involved with one of our committees. This year, through our Herstory committee, we will be gathering submissions and publishing our third book of women leaders in Miami-Dade County. See our Herstory page on the website for information. Our annual Women of Impact event, held every March, honors women who have distinguished themselves in Miami-Dade County. It is a great opportunity to select these women, get to know them and honor them in an annual ceremony. Please consider joining this great committee. Please contact me if you are interested at joannrobertshomes@gmail.com Thirdly, we host an annual scholarship program for high school seniors. Assistance is needed with soliciting donations for the scholarships and reading the applications from these outstanding students. Again, contact me if you are interested in the Scholarship Committee.

Here is to a safe and wonderful summer for all. The next upcoming activity will be the Women of Impact nominations, which will be available in late August or early September. Look for updates on this website.

Membership

Membership is open to any individuals interested in promoting and supporting women’s history efforts in Miami-Dade County. Dues are accepted on an annual basis in the following categories: 

$50           Firm/Corporation
$40           Non-profit organization
$30           Individual
$10            Student

The following volunteer opportunities are available for any member:

  • Serve on the Women of Impact Committee to select and plan the annual Women of Impact event
  • Serve on the Committee to plan and execute the Julia Tuttle Gravesite Ceremony each March 1st
  • Speakers Bureau – serve as a speaker for classroom presentation or group speeches during Women’s History Month
  • Oral Histories – serve on the committee to help document the achievements of Women of Impact

To join as a member, please contact the Treasurer for a membership application. The volunteer opportunities are listed on the application and you will receive a follow up call from the Chair of the particular committee you choose.
